My 7 Years in
"Anxiety Hell"
The feeling of being out of control
overwhelmed me. I kept thinking that I should be able to
control my symptoms just by using my will power.
I sweated, shook, couldn't get my
breath, my heart raced, I was dizzy, and I thought I was
going to die. I also lived in constant fear of having
another
panic attack.
This condition began in 1979 and
lasted for seven years. It started one day while I was
barreling down the freeway in the fast lane. Suddenly, I
was blindsided with an intense bout of dizziness and
nearly lost control of the car.
That was the beginning of my "freeway
phobia." Nearly every day, I would force myself to
get back out there and try to control or overcome my
"white-knuckling" terror of driving on the freeway.
It only took a couple of hundred
yards before I had my hazard lights blinking and was
creeping along the shoulder until I reached the next
exit.
From there, over the next several
months, the symptoms progressed into full-blown anxiety
and panic disorders.
I went from doctor to doctor, trying
to find a cure. I saw psychologists, psychotherapists,
and psychiatrists. They spun me in chairs, sent me to ear
doctors and neurologists. I had cat scans done of my
brain and various other tests performed.
Nobody understood what was wrong with
me. The doctors prescribed all kinds of pills that made me
feel even worse. I sunk into a
depression
born of
hopelessness.
I often
pressed my family and friends into service to drive me about or accompany me
on errands or doctor's appointments when I felt extra shaky, uptight, and fearful. The
stress of my disorder frequently created a negative
impact on others and in my home life.
Anxiety
had not been recognized as a
disorder with a classification by the medical or
psychological community yet. No wonder I
was unable to find help.
During this period, I
returned to school to get my
doctorate in psychology .
I did this despite my severe disability--which I
tried to keep hidden.
As a result of furthering my
education, I discovered an emerging field of
Holistic approaches
to
mental and physical wellness. This became known as
Energy Psychology also known as Energy Therapy.
Being
intrigued by all the exciting possibilities, I focused
on learning everything I could about anxiety,
depression, and other related issues. The focus of my
studies turned fully holistic.
I spent several years going
through many different training programs--I have
34
certifications
to date in
addition to my academic
degrees, internships, psych-assistantships, and
additional supervised clinical practice.
I learned
many mental,
emotional, spiritual, and physical processes that transformed anxiety into relaxation,
peace of mind, the joy of life, and personal empowerment.
Some of the leading-edge
techniques I learned that was holistic to conventional approaches
at the time included achieving
board-certified mastery
in medical and clinical hypnosis and neuro-linguistic
programming (NLP).
Other certifications and training
involved
guided imagery ,
Eye Movement,
Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR),
Thought Field
Therapy (TFT),
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) also
known as "tapping"),
Core Transformation,
Time Line Therapy,
past life regression,
and future life
progression.
Also included was metaphysics.
This philosophy studies the general and fundamental
problems, such as those connected with existence,
knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language, and more.
