The Real Truth about Hypnosis
31 Frequently Asked Questions and Answers!

By Dianne Ruth, CCH, PhD
Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis by the trained hypnotherapist
to help a person make positive, desired alternative changes.
In some states,
it is not permissible to refer to oneself as a hypnotherapist without having
an appropriate medical or psychological background.
Your subconscious/unconscious or inner mind holds your core beliefs and
attitudes. It is also your gateway to super consciousness, that part of you
which can transcend time and distance.
When emotional pain and trauma is released from the recesses of your mind,
the physical body’s stored stress is also released from your cells.
You can
then experience calmness, peace and a feeling of joy, relief and lightness
from resolving an old issue, changing behaviors and old patterns, learning
new information, connecting with your inner wisdom, changes in how you
perceive yourself and others.
You can learn how to let go of old hurts and angers so they no longer affect
you physically and emotionally. Your unconscious mind holds the keys to
health, happiness and self-empowerment.

Absolutely not! The hypnotist or hypnotherapist is just an ordinary person
who has gone through special training to learn how the mind works.
They
learn and how to negotiate with it to get the desired outcome. Anyone that
wants to can be trained in this profession.
Posthypnotic suggestions are given during the trance state to the
unconscious or inner mind.
You know that hypnosis is working for you when
you spontaneously or unconsciously carry out a positive and desirable
command after your hypnotherapy session.
For example, during your
hypnotherapy session, you are instructed to enjoy a wonderfully refreshing
and deep sleep that night, waking up the following morning full of energy
and delightful anticipation for a new day.
Sometimes programmed changes may appear subtle at first. They tend to
intensify; however, as they evolve, interact with, and build on old and new
foundations of experience.
Different responses to daily events may seem unrelated to your hypnotherapy
work at times. That is because the generated changes are occurring at an
unconscious level, and feel like a natural reaction–which they are!
Hypnosis is a state of hypersuggestability. While in the hypnotic trance
state, it is believed that a person is about one hundred times more
susceptible to a positive or acceptable suggestion than at any other time.
The only evidence of true, effective hypnosis or self-hypnosis is the
posthypnotic response. This means that whatever positive life changes in the
form of suggestions you give yourself or the hypnotherapist gives you while
in the trance state; you tend to carry them out later.

It depends on how deeply you drift into the hypnotic trance state. You may
experience a feeling of heaviness, or you may feel light or like you are
floating; you may have tingling sensations or just feel pleasantly relaxed.
You may notice yourself fading or zoning in and
out of awareness; one minute you are aware of the hypnotherapist’s voice;
the next moment you simply drift away–then back again.
Alternately, you may not even be aware that you were hypnotized. You will
usually have total recall of everything that was said and took place, and a
complete awareness of all your surroundings.
Once you begin to recognize
positive changes in the way you think and feel, you will know that you have
been hypnotized.
Most everyone feels very comfortable and enjoys the state immensely.
Hypnosis is a state of total and utter tranquility that’s highly enjoyable!
It is so relaxing you tend to lose track of time.
Some people feel as though
the session lasted just a few minutes. For others, it seems as though they
have been in that relaxed state for hours. This phenomenon is sometimes
referred to as being in a time warp.
Sometimes, in the beginning, a person may be so agitated, restless, or
unfocused that they are unable to experience sufficient concentration and
relaxation to benefit from the usual hypnotherapeutic process.
Hypnosis is only one of many tools and techniques used to uncover
information or to work out problems. Other ways of working can be used
initially such as energy work like
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to
help prepare the person for other forms of healing and release work.
In some cases, all it takes is a little time spent on establishing rapport
and trust first. Eventually, the person may elect to proceed with learning
self-hypnosis as a beginning toward using altered states of consciousness
work for getting more efficient results.

It depends on the complexity of your issue, if you have more than one issue,
and how deeply buried the causes are. It also depends on how much better you
would like to feel.
Sometimes, a person is perfectly satisfied to simply be more comfortable
with learning how to manage the stress an abusive boss is creating;
sometimes a person wants to make major changes that lead to phenomenal and
incredible happiness and success.
For instance, this might be redefining yourself, and recreating your future.
It might include discovering your purpose and mission in life and learning
how to follow through to get what you want, perhaps with a career change,
finding a soul mate, going back to school, or making new decisions about
relationships. It’s all up to you.
There are no contracts, obligations or
strings attached to continuing the work.
For most clients, the first session produces a shift into feeling more
hopeful and better about their decision to engage in hypnotherapy.
Often,
the client may experience their first formal hypnosis induction. By about
the third or fourth session, quantum leaps toward resolutions are being
made. Sometimes by the sixth session, clients are done.
Other factors that determine your success is the regularity of your
hypnosis sessions. Weekly appointments at a minimum work best, at least
in the beginning.
Hypnosis is not a magic pill. You will actually have to do some work along
the way such as attending your hypnotherapy sessions or listening to your
self-hypnosis audio recordings on a regular basis.
Sometimes I will suggest
simple techniques for personal self-editing that you can practice between
sessions, or optional other homework that will accelerate your progress.
Because of the powerful methods I use to teach a client successful self-use
techniques for taking control of their life–for life, the average length of
time a client works with me is between 3 and 5 months. Goals, of
course, are usually set.
If you could change an unwanted behavior or emotional response using will
power alone, then you would not have any problems!
Will power uses logic,
desire, reasoning, and sheer determination. It resides in the conscious
mind, which is only about 20% of your total mind power.
The remaining 80% of the powerful subconscious, unconscious, or inner
mind is where the negative behavior or unwanted emotions are deeply rooted.
The conscious mind when in conflict with the inner mind can interfere with
the process when it considers it to be a “scary” change in its role to
“protect” you by keeping you in your current “comfort” zone.
Even though the hypnotherapist is speaking directly to the inner mind, the
conscious mind is aware of everything being said and can recall everything
that takes place, if you want it to.
Sometimes people have the idea that
they are supposed to forget everything, so they do–because they gave
themselves the suggestion to forget!
Of course, you can always give yourself
the suggestion that you will remember absolutely everything, if it is in
your best interest to do so.
Sometimes, it is in the best interest of the client to let certain memories
remain buried because of severe associated trauma.
One way a skilled and
trained hypnotherapist works with this kind of situation is to encourage the
memory to remain unconscious while directed healing and release work takes
place at a deeper level.
Once the release of negative emotionally charged energies has occurred, it
becomes safe and comfortable for the memory to be retrieved.
You cannot
change what has happened to you; you can, however, change how you respond to
it, once you have the knowledge on how to do that.
Interestingly, most traditional talk therapy approaches healing with the
premise that by reliving a traumatic memory over and over, desensitization
will take place. Unfortunately, current research is turning up evidence that
this approach of repeatedly reliving the trauma often makes it worse!
