In simple terms Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is the ancient
Chinese art of placement. Feng Shui is used to bring harmony and balance
to your home and prosperity to your business. It is also used to help
create good relationships.
There are nine schools of Feng Shui that have developed over the
centuries. Feng Shui consultants may use any combination of the different
schools to create positive change.
In Feng Shui theory, because we are all
born at different times, we each have different directions that are
favorable or unfavorable. There are five elements and eight directions
which represent compass points. These can affect emotions, health, wealth
and family.
How does Feng Shui work its magic? Some ideas for creating
a positive flow of chi in our environment—also known as universal life
energy—can be done through rearranging our furniture, adding mirrors,
plants, wind chimes, and water
fountains. It can also be accomplished by getting rid of all clutter.
Where you place your bed may affect your rest. Avoid placing your bed
so the path of the chi (energy) coming in from your doorway cuts across it
which could disturb your sleep.
Also avoid putting your bed so that you
can only get in on one side unless you want to be alone. In addition, be
sure that the foot of your bed is not directly opposite the doorway.
One of the most important rooms in the house is the kitchen. More
mistakes are made in this room than any other.
The refrigerator should not
be directly next to or directly opposite the stove because the stove
represents the fire element and the refrigerator represents the water
element. Water puts out fire and may have a direct effect on your
finances.
It is important not to mix energies. For example, you do not want to
put office and electronic equipment in the bedroom. It could block your
business from growing.
In the work environment the placement of the desk is the most important
issue. The desk should face the entryway of the office, if possible,
without being in direct line to the door.
If this is not an option, place
a mirror so it reflects the doorway when you sit at your desk. Some
positions are more powerful than others.
The goal is to do whatever it takes to move the chi (energy) in
positive directions.
Being aware of these energies helps you to manifest
well-being.
My training in Feng Shui left me believing that, in addition to some
basic understanding of placement, the best guide is your own intuition and
sensitivity.
Because there can be many different theories from one school
to another, it comes down to deciding what feels or looks right, and what
allows the energy to gently and freely move from one area to another.
