Most people, have suffered one or more upsetting losses due to theft, burglary or robbery; I know I have been a victim of these types of crimes–sadly, more than once. I understand the feelings of violation, injustice, anger and grief that can take over when something like this happens. Searching for something positive–some learning you got from the experience, can sometimes be challenging. If you can’t think of anything, just pretend you can, and make up something. Even a simple decision to find improved ways to safeguard your possessions in the future, however, can help to release the negative emotions that can bog one down into continually obsessing about the tragedy. When you lose something, if possible, always replace the lost item with something better, as soon as you can. For example, someone steals your tablet or your smart phone; go out and purchase a newer and later model. If the replacement is the same model that you lost, you can personalize and enhance it by adding a colorful charging cable or a fancy case to it. Doing this can usually give relief and help to bring joy back into your life. If the stolen item was something that had strong sentimental value such as an heirloom or a piece of jewelry, and is irreplaceable, close your eyes, and just create a clear picture of the item in your mind. Bring the picture closer and make it bigger than life size, bright and colorful. Use your imagination and be creative. While keeping this picture on the movie screen of your mind, type, write down or make an audio recording describing the item and all the positive memories that are associated with it. If someone gave it to you, also add a list of the delightful characteristics of that person that you cared about. Place this record in a secure location, and whenever you feel sad or melancholy about your loss, you can review your notes, reflect on the values, and enjoy the sweet feelings that fill you, while recalling the bright and colorful image of the missing item and the person who gave it to you.
