What should I call you?
Do you ever discuss your patients/clients with your
colleagues or family?

Why do I have to do so much paperwork?
Do you have a receptionist, someone who answers your phone and makes appointments with your clients for you?

Is there anything I can do to feel better right now?

ANSWER:

Yes. My approach is multi-level. I take time to teach a wide variety of self-help management tools to you (ways to temporarily help yourself to feel better) while I also concentrate on doing the deeper work with you that is going to bring about permanent resolution and healing.

By doing it this way, you can find some short-term relief while your recovery process is occurring. Also, you can be more confident that when you are through with your work, the original problem(s) will not only have disappeared, they will stay gone for good.

How long will it take for me to get better?

ANSWER:

A course of Life Coaching & Alternative/Holistic Counseling is accomplished, on average, between 12 and 16, 1-1/2 hour sessions. Put another way, about three to five months is the average time it takes for most clients.

This is dependent on the complexity and depth of the issues being dealt with. It also depends on how you process information. Some clients process information very quickly in leaps and bounds--almost intuitively, while others do this more slowly and tend to be more thoughtful and thorough.

Some clients have a real need to spend more time talking through their problems before engaging in the change work, while others are content to concentrate mainly on following the directives and going for results.

There is no right way or wrong way. These are simply samples of individual styles. I honor and respect all approaches to healing.

By doing 1½ hour sessions throughout your course of coaching, you will arrive at your goal and achieve your intended outcomes in about half the time it would take doing the more traditional single 45-minute sessions.

Throughout our relationship, I hold sacred space filled with compassion, understanding and loving support just for you.

I am completely non-judgmental and utterly shock-proof, no matter what comes up. I continue to respond with total acceptance of you as a unique and special person worthy of all the best life has to offer

How often will I need to come in?

ANSWER:

Weekly sessions of 1-1/2 hours is the most popular and results in a more rapid recovery. In addition, I offer several options.

If you are in a hurry to get through the process in about half the time, and achieve relief that much faster, doing two 1-1/2 hour sessions weekly, that is a total of 1-1/2 hours each or 3 hours a week, can make the difference. In fact, I frequently have clients who choose this option.

Some clients prefer doing a session every other week. When doing it this way, the rate of progress is often faster than the more traditional 45-minute psychotherapy sessions weekly as more material can be covered because you gain more time by starting and ending a session only once instead of twice.

You have scheduling flexibility. That means you can choose one way or combine different ways. It has been proven that phone sessions are equally as effective and successful as in-person sessions.

For average recovery time it is important to make every effort to do a minimum of at least one session every other week.

In the beginning, along with the deeper work taking place, you are also building a set of self-help skills that can serve you and keep the momentum of your personal development going.

Then, if you have to reduce your number of sessions per month later on, you can continue to improve, even if your progress is scaled down accordingly.

Why is Life Coaching & Alternative/Holistic Counseling easier and more effective than traditional counseling?

ANSWER:

Imagine, throughout your childhood you received a number of emotional hurts. Each one was like a puff of air that was blown into a balloon, which was then held under water. After all, you wanted to keep it "submerged, repressed and out of sight," right?

After a while, the balloon got bigger and bigger with every new puff of air that was added to it. Finally, as a result of the ongoing pressure placed on the "balloon," a full-blown condition of misery, fear and acute stress takes over your life.

Many professionals would have you learn how to just "hold the balloon under water" better and longer. I on the other hand, will be continuously giving you feedback while showing you how to "let the air out of the balloon" that you have been "holding under water" for so long.

For instance, one might be with an anger management program where the client is taught how to "stuff" or repress their anger more effectively. Maybe they are taught to count to 10, or snap a rubber band that they are wearing around their wrist whenever they start to feel upset.

This is supposed to help the client manage their anger, and hopefully, prevent them from losing control--which rarely works.

With me, there is no will willpower, effort or struggle needed for accomplishing the changes you want. That is because most of the work I do with you is done at the unconscious level, and through the non-verbal methods, scientifically engineered and embedded word patterns and metaphoric messages I use to support and guide you toward a comfortable recovery.

Will I have to relive any traumas from my past?

ANSWER:

Traditionally, many professionals have believed that it is necessary to go over and over a trauma in order for you to desensitize from the distress of it. Current research indicates that this approach can be psychologically harmful and may actually make a client worse!

All the techniques and processes I use are designed to prevent you from having to revisit and re-experience any emotionally upsetting events. Healing is quicker and non-painful when done at the unconscious level.

I have had many clients over the years that have compared their work with me to their experience with a former psychotherapist. Their statements have described entering the session feeling bad, talking about how bad they feel, and leaving the session feeling worse than when they went in.

With me, they insist that because of the way I work, they always feel progressively and surprisingly better by the end of every session.

What does Alternative Counseling mean?

ANSWER:

My approach to your healing and recovery is holistic. I consider a broader range of human experience than mainstream psychotherapy does. I include your work, friends and family, gender and sexuality, understanding yourself and spirituality.

I see you as a complex being whose experiences include your body, mind and spirit as well as your social and cultural environment. In addition, I consider heredity and genetic influences, belief systems, values and personal goals.

What about Coaching.... What does it do?

ANSWER:

Coaching guides you in the easy mastery of simple techniques, processes and methods that help you to feel better. Ultimately, all the different procedures and systems for healing that I offer you, will become your own personal tools for continuing your well-being for life.

Coaching also helps you to organize and plan your tasks, goals and intentions. When working with a coach, there is an accountability factor involved. This means that when you agree to do something, the coach will hold you accountable for the accomplishment, which adds motivation to your performance and the desired result.

What happens in the first session?

ANSWER:

The first meeting is devoted to our establishing a mutual rapport, and for me to gain a deeper understanding of your problems and concerns.

Getting to know each other is an important part of this time together. This is accomplished through an interactive dialog between the two of us. I will ask certain leading questions in order to develop a map of the emotional territory that defines the blocks and crisis you are experiencing.

Also, time is taken for a quick review of the initial paperwork. (I will follow up on my own time with a more detailed examination of the forms you filled out.) If I have any questions later, I will bring them up in the following session.

Based on the findings, we will discuss a broad plan of action that will successfully respond to your personal needs. the beginning of that plan is then begun.

This plan is created based on the nature of your issues. It generally consists of selecting a variety of advanced hypnotic procedures, energy work and other powerful leading edge interventions. For instance, personalized "metaphor" delivery could be included.

Other methods for accelerating your progress involve helping you to learn simple and powerful self-use tools like NLP anchoring to have instant access to feel good resources and EFT, often referred to as "acupressure for the emotions." These skills will help to further your personal development and attain self-mastery in the areas of your choice.

If you are willing to suspend all skepticism, judgment, analysis, logic and rationale while engaging in the various methods of guided communication with your own unconscious mind, well, "magic" just happens....

I will be showing you how to open up that channel of communication with your own unconscious mind so you can reprogram it to give you the responses you seek.

What happens during the following several sessions?

ANSWER:

The course of Life Coaching & Alternative/Holistic Counseling is like building a house. In the first session we create a "blueprint" that will harmonize with your desired outcome.

The following few sessions concentrate on clearing and leveling the land [old emotional blocks and unwanted baggage] and putting in the foundation [accessing new and more resourceful thinking].

By around the sixth or seventh session, the framing for the walls are raised and the assembly for the roof trusses (skeleton of a roof) is begun.

At this point in time, and for the previous week or so, you have likely become aware of noticeable changes and improvements in your thinking and in your feelings.

In fact, you are now able to really experience the quantum leaps you have been making by the end of each visit.

Actually, sometimes a client will prematurely believe they are all better and done with Life Coaching & Alternative/Holistic Counseling.

While they have certainly improved, for most of them, to abort the work would be like cutting the top of the weed off and leaving the roots to produce more weeds. At this point, it would be a tragic mistake to stop the work.

Top of Page

How will I know when I am done?

ANSWER:

As further sessions take place, other people may begin to notice and comment on your amazing and impressive changes.

For instance, you may no longer be acting temperamental or irritable, or you seem so much more relaxed to the point that you actually look younger because the stress lines in your face have disappeared.

Family, friends or co-workers ask if you have lost weight when the only weight you have lost are those heavy emotional burdens you have been carrying. Perhaps you seem so much more energized, creative, relaxed, happier and more at peace.

Near the end of your work, you will achieve a state of continuous positive self-reflection, self-directed action, and self-acceptance. You will proudly hold yourself accountable for all your own actions and behaviors.

Your self-confidence soars, abundance in life's treasures are flowing, and profound inner peace resides within you. In addition, you have resolved, healed and fully recovered from whatever issues you had in the beginning.

When this happens, your imaginary house is now complete. All the finishing work and interior decorating is done--although most people will say a house is forever a work in progress.

What happens when I am all better?

ANSWER:

Next, a phase-out plan may be arranged. It could be a decision to continue with semi-monthly or monthly sessions for a while.

This would result in accelerated emotional and spiritual evolution. Alternately, a final session is scheduled for a review of your progress, and for creating closure.

Do you take insurance?

ANSWER:

Health care insurance generally only covers licensed psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists under mental health benefits.

[There is no license available to cover the kind of work I do as a Life Coach & Alternative/Holistic Counselor.]

PROS: Your insurance co-pay cost is relatively low.

CONS: Mental health coverage differs widely between insurance companies. However, some commonalities may include a very limited number of sessions such as a maximum of six or twelve 45-50 minute sessions. These limited number of sessions may then be scheduled monthly instead of weekly, frequently due to a backlog of waiting patients.

There is often a waiting list of weeks or months before receiving treatment through an HMO or PPO plan.

Different medications are generally prescribed along with this brief treatment program.

The fact that you have received mental health benefits goes into your medical record, and there is always a risk that confidentiality might be compromised.

Also, if your diagnosis falls into a major personality disorder category as defined by the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals of Mental Disorders), this could possibly prevent you from ever qualifying for mental health coverage with a new insurance company later on.

There is also the risk of these records being discovered by a prospective employer and causing you to lose out on a coveted job opportunity in the future.

What are your hours?

ANSWER:

My appointment hours are from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and 4:00 to 5:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Some mornings may also be available usually beginning at 10:45 and ending at 12:15 pm. Sunday and Monday is my weekend off.

Small adjustments to my hours can often be made to accommodate a difficult schedule. Please discuss this with me if you have a challenge fitting your schedule into mine.

Which is higher, a PhD degree or an MD degree?

ANSWER:

[The following answer is a direct quote from Wikipedia.]

The PhD is the highest degree. An MD is a professional degree, nothing more. A  PhD is always a higher degree than this and represents a finished education whereas a MD is nowhere near the completion of an education, There is no dispute on this.

A PhD holder is called "Doctor" and this is never confused with a physician who is also referred to in society as "doctor" but who is only one for professional reasons.

People often say that we should not call PhDs doctor because this is confusing... confusing for WHOM? No PhD would condescend to misrepresent herself by telling someone that she was a physician if she was not (as if she would actually care!).

Thus, no one is confused; this is a misrepresentation and a mischaracterization that lay people persist in believing.

Therefore, PhDs are always called "doctor" because it is a matter of respect to those who are, indeed doctors, and who have indeed earned the highest form of education available.

[Here is the short answer: An MD is taught what to think; a PhD is taught how to think.]

What should I call you?

ANSWER:

Many years ago I was a psychotherapist in a psychiatric clinic. A young woman came to me for help. Wanting to be friendly, I invited her to call me Dianne.

She immediately registered a look of shock and horror as she loudly proclaimed: I can't do that! If I can't call you "Doctor," then I can't believe you will be able to help me to heal!

Since that time, I have made it a practice to welcome whatever name my clients prefer to call me.

Some of the monikers that have been used (besides Dianne or Dr. Ruth) are: Doc, Dr. Dianne, Dr. Di, Ruth, plus some other delightful nicknames. Please call me whatever makes you comfortable, and I will be happy.

Do you ever discuss your patients/clients with your colleagues or family?

I promise that information provided to me about you will be treated as confidential.

There may be rare occasions when a client has an unusual presenting issue and I may seek a trusted and reputable colleague's opinion on a treatment plan. This is done, however, without ever revealing who you are or any information that could ever lead to your identity.

Why do I have to do so much paperwork?

Imagine Sandy wanted to drive across the country from Los Angeles to New York City, but she didn’t have a map or knowledge of the routes.

Being determined to make the trip in spite of this problem, Sandy looks for a road sign that says, "east," which just happens to be I-10.

After a considerable amount of time later, Sandy reaches the east coast; however, Sandy discovers she is in Jacksonville, Florida instead of New York City!

Refusing to give up, Sandy realizes that she now needs to go north. Well, I-95 goes north, so Sandy starts driving again. Finally she reaches her destination, travel weary and nearly broke.

The paperwork I ask for provides me with an overview of a map that shows the best and fastest way for me to help you reach your goal. Because the trip is so much shorter and you have saved a huge amount of money, you are much happier, richer and feel amazingly confident, valued and experience a profound sense of inner peace.

Do you have a receptionist, someone who answers your phone and makes appointments with your clients for you?

No. I take confidentiality very seriously. I do not employ a receptionist nor do I use a phone answering service. My phone has a dedicated line just for my business–no one else answers my phone... ever. I answer all calls personally.

If I am unavailable, you can rest assured that my voice mail is also completely confidential as I am the only one who ever listens to it.

In addition, I always communicate directly with you about scheduling appointments or any other questions or concerns you wish to discuss.

***

If you have a question that is not answered above, please contact me by phone, text or email and I will answer it personally. If it is a question with an answer that may be of interest to others, then I will also post it here.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, psychotherapy only has a 20% success rate.

I have a 97% success rate, and over 37 years experience.

I honor and respect your race, religion, culture, and way of life including senior citizens and those with disabilities.

I also welcome adults in consensual, sane and safe, alternative sexual and other creative lifestyle choices.
