Concerns About Antidepressants and Prozac

by John Janis
National Awareness Director for DrugWatch.com

Depression, also called "major depressive disorder," affects approximately 21 million Americans annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many young people and adults can be affected by this mental disorder, which affects how a person feels, thinks and acts.

In the treatment of depression, psychotherapy and antidepressant medications are commonly used to control symptoms of the condition. Some antidepressant medications have a sedating effect that can help to treat symptoms of insomnia and hyperactivity associated with depression, while other antidepressants have a stimulating effect that works to combat the feelings of listlessness and lack of energy associated with depression.

The majority of antidepressants work to restore the balance of certain chemicals in the brain which affect mood. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a newer type of antidepressant that is often used to restore the natural balance of levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Examples of SSRI antidepressants include Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac.

While antidepressants such as Prozac are widely used in the treatment of depression, the medications are not without side effects. Possible Prozac side effects include sexual dysfunction, anxiety, insomnia, seizures, decreased appetite, impulsive actions, hyperactivity, weight loss and suicidal thoughts. Withdrawal effects may also occur when treatment with Prozac is stopped, and side effects such as loss of libido and sexual dysfunction may persist long after treatment has ended in the case of post SSRI sexual dysfunction.

Many individuals have chosen to file a Prozac lawsuit in response to another unwanted side effect: serious birth defects if the medication is taken by women who are pregnant. According to recent scientific studies, taking Prozac during pregnancy has been found to increase the risk of serious and potentially fatal birth defects such as anencephaly (absence of a brain, skull or scalp in a fetus), persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), and respiratory distress and withdrawal symptoms at birth.

It is important for patients to be aware of the risks and benefits associated with antidepressant treatment in order to make educated decisions about their treatment options.

Eat More Peanut Butter

by
Dianne Ruth, PhD

According to some nutritional experts, adding more protein to your diet such as meat, fish, eggs and yes, peanut butter, is more powerful than Prozac--and without the side effects!
